The Cure for Anxiety

see here “The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phillippians 5b-7

God wants us to come to Him with every worry and concern and tell him what we hope for.  We may be in adverse circumstances and bad relationships. We may owe lots of money or be worried about a wayward child.  We may be suffering persecution on the job, or have a sick spouse.  Whatever the circumstance, God has an open ear to our cries.

What he doesn’t promise is to change the circumstances or grant our requests.  What He promises is far beyond the circumstances in the here and now.  What He promises is that no matter what the circumstances, He will give us a peace beyond comprehension, unexplainable to those around us.   He does not promise to guard our bodies-we may still suffer illness and pain, but He does promise to guard our hearts and minds.

In Adam Clarke’s commentary on Phillippians 4:7, he describes the peace of God as “that harmonizing of all passions and appetites which is produced by the Holy Spirit, and arises from a sense of pardon and the favor of God.” To keep our hearts is ” as a strong place or castle.  Your hearts-the seat of all your affections and passions, and minds-your understanding, judgment, and conscience through Jesus Christ,  through whom ye were brought into this state of favor, through whom ye were preserved  in it, and in whom ye possess it, for Christ keeps that heart in peace in which He dwells and rules.  This peace passeth all understanding; it is of a very different nature from all that can arise from human occurrences; it is a peace which Christ has purchased, and which God dispenses; it is felt by all the truly godly, but can be explained by none; it is communion with the Father, and His Son Jesus Christ, by the power and influence of the Holy Ghost.

Commentary on the Whole Bible, Adam Clarke
