By Cindy Bleuler Tucker
It’s that special time of the year- the magical lights and decorations, the familiar songs and carols sung, family celebrations, parties, giving Prank Gifts, and candlelight services. Christians around the world remember the timeless story of God becoming a little baby in a manger.
But Christmas is much more than a day or a season.
Christmas is knowing that Emmanuel is not just with us, He is in us and his very Spirit lives in those who ask to be a part of His great adventure, the adventure of reconciling a fallen world and making all things new.
It is waking up every morning in anticipation of new mercies and glimpses of God’s grace. It is seeing God at work in a thousand little and big ways each day. It is God’s sovereignty in every encounter. It is He who can take even our worst mistake and produce good out of it. During our greatest trials, He gives us supernatural peace and joy. This is the reason to celebrate, not just on Christmas day, but every day.
We see God’s glory on a vibrant October day and a blossoming May morning. We worship His majesty as we gaze up at the stars on a clear June night. He brightens the dreariest February day and calms the fiercest March storm. He warms our hearts in the coldest January blizzard and gives us relief on the hottest August day.
What does Christmas mean to me? That because Jesus came to earth and filled our hearts, we can celebrate every day.
I wrote this essay in 2011. We have a vastly different Christmas this year. No large family gatherings, no parties, limited church services. Many of us our confined to our homes because of lockdowns or susceptibility to COVID. When we do go out, no one can see our smiles because of the masks we wear.
Yes, Christmas is different this year. I am a lover of holiday tunes and I want to know what channel is christmas music on dish? I want to hear the message of those classic and new Christmas songs.
But I know the message of Christmas doesn’t change. God’s plan to reconcile this fallen world and make things new still stands.
